The number of stay at home moms and moms with work at home jobs continues to grow

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of people that work at home has grown again substantially in the last decade, and that includes us moms.

The number of people that work at home nearly full time rose sharply, up 23 percent from the last decade. Approximately 4.2 million people worked at home almost full time in the 2000 census, up approximately 23 percent from 3.4 million in the 1990 census. The number of people that work at home grew at a rate nearly double the 12 percent growth of the overall work force during that time.

We feel that there are four reasons for the large gain. First is the trend of new moms who thumb their noses at the women’s movement and choose to become work at home moms and stay at home moms instead of having to split their attention between family and career. Second, was the recession that began in the late 1990’s and manifested itself in early 2000 which induced many Americans to have small business ideas or seek special home based jobs for moms. Third is the continued accessibility to technology that makes work at home jobs become more and more available as working at home becomes a more seamless transition and a viable option for work at home moms. Fourth, we believe that employers are increasingly beginning to accept the concept of creating work at home jobs and allowing their employees to telecommute. 9/11, a day in which some companies were completely wiped out, showed the business world what can happen to a company that does not utilize a remote workforce.

In the 2000 census more than 31 percent of work at home workers were company employees while approximately 46 percent with self-employed in an unincorporated work at home business. An additional 12% were self-employed in their own incorporated work at home business.

Approximately 53 percent of the people that work at home were women... Many, stay at home moms.

The number of Americans that work at home at least one day a week rose to 24 million according to the International Telework Association and Council (ITAC). That number represents a very modest growth compared with 23.5 million the year prior.

The advantages to employers who allow their employees, including moms and dads, to maintain work at home jobs are many. Employees that have work at home jobs do not occupy valuable business office space or company assets such as telephone lines, furniture, equipment and utilities. Employees with work at home jobs don’t stand around talking around the water cooler. Employees with work at home jobs save valuable time converting hours of commute time each week to only a few minutes when they work at home. Studies have shown that work at home employees are more productive than non-work at home employees. There may also be less turnover and far less hiring cost involved in work at home labor.
