THE BUZZ: The first trailer for this "high-concept comedy" hit the Internet with a thud. Sadly, The Bounty Hunter looks to be kind of mainstream fare that could have been made by either Jennifer Aniston or Gerard Butler at the beginning of their respective careers -- but now? It feels like safe and mid-range entertainment. I can understand it if Gerard Butler and his handlers are trying to find a balance between action flicks and romantic comedies, but all they really need to do is re-watch The Ugly Truth to realize the genre does not suit him. I'm surprised Butler isn't holding a gun over his anatomy in the poster. Speaking of the poster, where is Jennifer Aniston's left hip? THE BUZZ: Writer Jeff Kinney created Wimpy as a web-comic in 2004, and the pop-culture phenomenon quickly grew into a daily online strip and, ultimately, a series of novels that rival Twilight in popularity. We'll see how it translates as the first movie in a potential franchise, though awareness of the movie is almost nil. THE BUZZ: Leonardo DiCaprio was once set to star alongside Jude Law in this adaptation of Matchstick Men writer Eric Garcia's novel (Garcia wrote the screenplay with "House M.D." scribe Garrett Lerner). We love that Universal, who put out Cirque du Freak at the end of 2009, is taking chances with their projects, even if Repo! A Genetic Opera bombed (despite its cult status) and Repo Man's Alex Cox is having a title fight with the studio. Director: Niels Arden Oplev Stars: Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Ewa Fröling (Full Cast) Studio: Music Box Films The Plot: A journalist (Nyqvist) and a computer hacker (Rapace) are hired to investigate disappearance of young Harriet Vanger (Fröling). Their search connects to a series of decades-old murders, though it also begins to reveal the Vanger family's dark and secretive history.
THE BUZZ: A huge hit in its native Sweden, Dragon Tattoo has already been optioned by Sony for a remake, with Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List) scripting and lit-minded Scott Rudin producing, and David Fincher circling the director's chair. The movie's two sequels were released within a year of the original, so it'll be interesting to see who's cast in the potential franchise. And I imagine it means a whole chunk of additional change for the estate of novelist Stieg Larsson, who passed away right before the first novel was published. THE BUZZ: I am one of those people who feels that Tim Burton's artistic vision is directly in line with Lewis Carroll's novels, and he is one of few filmmakers who can get away with asserting that a likable movie adaptation has never been made of this story. THE BUZZ: Entertainment writers are worked up about (1) Universal's box-office slump and (2) the studio's decision to move Green Zone out of the 2009 Oscar zone. To me, this is a sign that the movie actually might be entertaining and not some bore, a la most every other recent Iraq War picture aside from the most recent Best Picture winner. Meanwhile, we're wondering if Jason Bourne's fans will accept Matt Damon as a solider, especially since the proposed fourth Bourne adventure isn't a signed deal at this stage. THE BUZZ: James Cameron's response to upping the world of visual effects? He takes a new approach to 3D -- all the way down to creating his own cameras -- and augments the natural world by introducing new plant life and creatures to the aforementioned band of humans. It's the kind of anticipation that even makes President Roslin swoon. Meanwhile, Sam Worthington quietly has become new face of sci-fi. That makes us swoon. THE BUZZ: You know, RPattz's Little Ashes performed well given its subject matter and lack of major-studio muscle. It's quite possible a romantic story with a relatable premise (sorry, How to Be) from the studio that brought us Edward Cullen could lure plenty of the Twilight audience into theaters over this weekend and beyond. Good thing there was a seasoned cast and crew on what was widely reported as a difficult NYC shoot, given the thousands of fans who tracked R.P.'s every move. This is the first screenplay from Will Fetters, who currently is tinkering on A Star Is Born for Warner Bros. and director Nick Cassavetes (rumored to feature Russell Crowe and ... are you ready for this? ...
