Publisher's description of WOT for Firefox

From Against Intuition:

Keep yourself safe from spyware, adware, spam, viruses, browser exploits, unreliable online shops, phishing, and other Internet scams. With the free WOT browser add-on, you can easily see the reliability of companies and websites. WOT will warn you and save your computer before you interact with a harmful site. WOT, Web of Trust, is an online community for reputation rating that lets Internet users share their knowledge of websites, helping you stay in control when surfing the Web. Besides its users, WOT uses hundreds of trusted sources such as phishing site listings to keep you protected against rapidly spreading online threats. As you search with Google, you will see a tiny icon next to the Web link: green to go, yellow to slow down, red to stop. You can easily customize the protection level to your way of surfing the Web. WOT has information on 20 million Web sites. WOT ratings are shown also on Yahoo, Gmail, Wikipedia, and other sites. No registration is required.

Version 20081020 adds support for Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail, and makes blocking faster by using rating prefetching (when enabled).

  • "Crowdsourced site ratings"

Consisting of a simple icon placed on your Firefox toolbar, WOT offers a drop-down menu displays all the ratings criteria, which are based on a color-coded scale. As you browse, the scale displays ratings based on the overall trustworthiness of the site, if it could be trusted as a business partner, as a keeper for personal info, or if it is safe for children. The ratings are based on the opinions of other users, and on databases of known fraudulent sites. We were able to browse as usual and pull ratings for each site that we browsed from the destination Web site as well as from Yahoo and Google search results. The scale allows you to click and drag a bar to reflect your own experience and opinion of a Web site, then auto-saves the rating. As backup, more information about each rated site can be gleaned online from WOT's reputation scorecards, where users can also comment. WOT for Firefox offers users a little peace of mind while browsing the Web and guidance in unfamiliar territory, though we still caution to use it in conjunction with other surfing safeguards.

"WOT's got my back when I surf the Internet"

by kingmarble on October 29, 2008

Pros: The whole idea about having users rate websites and combining it with other sources like Phishtank, is brilliant. I mostly forget it's there until I run across a red rating. At the very least, it makes me think before I click.

Cons: There's nothing so far. If you don't like getting the donuts (icons that show rating) you can customize it to your style.

Summary: WOT places tiny icons next to search results that show what the rating is. You can see more by clicking on the icon and going to the scorecard. That's also where you can add your own comments.
If you click on a red link then a warning screen a... read more >>

    "WOT is powerful people-powered security!"

by pongsong on October 29, 2008

Pros: I like the fact that WOT users rate sites based on their experience. Users can leave an explanation on the scorecard which is helpful & interesting. WOT also uses sources like Phishtank, TRUSTe, etc.

Cons: Some people rate sites unfairly, but WOT & users are good about catching these and either asking for an explanation, or investigating themselves.

Summary: WOT uses a new method to combat Internet threats by combining user ratings with automated ones. We all have to help each other out in staying secure, and so far, WOT provides the best way to do that. I use it as a preventive warning system, along wi... read more >>

    "Powerful Security for your Computer"

by Freedomstarfox on November 22, 2008

Pros: WOT protects you from malicious websites based on User Opinions as well as numerous trusted sources. It allows users to give their own opinion on sites and report ratings they think are incorrect. The support email reply is really quick also.

Cons: Some users may rate sites unfairly. However, Against Intuition Inc. as well as users easily catch this and ask for an explanation.

Summary: WOT is a powerful security add-on. I find it to provide much more protection than McAfee SiteAdvisor does. Everyone is helping each other to stay safe on the web. The website not only provides scorecards with many user and trusted source comments bu... read more >>

"Not a really great idea letting Novices rate sites."

    by James_Goodwin on November 16, 2008

Pros: In theory it sounds good, but not a good idea, read my reasons why below.

Cons: It is never a good idea to let novices rate websites because they usually just write whatever they want, whether it is true or not, also if a competitor of some website decides to write bad stuff there is no recourse for the targeted website.

Summary: They also use references that either don't resolve or there is nothing to back them up. For instance they list advancedsearchbar.com and it does nothing bad, no malware, no adware, no spyware, and Advanced Searchbar has be reviewed in PC World, PC M... read more >>

"Ratings were unreliable. New edition hopefully better."

    by cpedley1 on November 16, 2008

Pros: A wonderful idea like McAfee Siteadvisor.

Cons: Developers do not seem to want anyone to comment in their forum with honest criticism. I find this odd. Isn't looking at criticism, a way to possibly improve a product?

Summary: I found reliable sites rated untrustworthy which could damage their reputation. When as a test I tried to see what influence ONE person could have on a site, I rated their site bad and found it stuck. They told me that one person could not do that. ... read more >>
