Version: ThumbsPlus Pro 7.0 build 2105

    "Very nice."

    by computer_genius on April 25, 2005

Pros: Intuitive interface, perfect photo managing, fast launching, very customizable, and over-all 5 stars! I feel that it is enough to rival ACDSee/PowerPack, but still I find ACDSee/PowerPack better. Anyway I bought it. This stands second to ACDSee PowerPack.

Cons: It's more expensive than ACDSee PowerPack, but less feature rich. But hey, it's worth a try; in fact even worth a buy.

    "The best"

    by R2_ on April 2, 2005

Pros: You have many options of Thumbnail list, from left to right, horizontal or column.

Easy change the stor by date size resolution and mutch more.

You can also choose the size of the thumbnails image, and the quality of it, to get a better use of memory.

It opens Mp3, wav, avi and other media files(yes it runs videos).

I use ThumbsPlus for almost 9 years, and still the best. It had never crash whit Win95/98 or XP.

    "Resource Hog / Crashes"

    by regvictor2000 on July 14, 2006

Pros: Searches for 'similar pictures' - works well

Cons: Memory Hog - No sooner do I turn ThumbsPlus Pro 7 (ver. 2105) than it takes up all available resources on my computer, something like 98% of the free cpu's. The program will crash on various pictures that other programs find no problem with!

I am running a Pentium 4 with 512k ram or so, and that isn't enough for it. I have looked to see if it is trying to index the entire hard drive or something but that doesn't seem to be the case - not that one can tell what process it is really running 'in the background.' I have done all their suggestions about how to deal with a 'slow' running system, and still it takes up all available CPU resources. I have let the program 'run' untouched for an hour or so in case if has some process running in the background, but still it sucks up all resources. Sometimes when I closed a picture ThumbsPlus Pro 7 had locked up on (and yes the program locks up), and if the picture could be closed - the entire program would shut off. I am not sure about earlier versions, but this program seems to need a little work. Generally when it locks up, one needs to cntl-alt-delete and kill the process called thumbs.exe.

Also, it would be nice if in their 'slideshow' they would have included a 'fade' transition - all the choices are rather harsh.

    "Halfhearted Garbage"

by compops on April 16, 2005

Pros: I feel if you want a program to help you find files it should be powerful and easy to use which ThumbsPlus 7 fails to do. The major problem with this software is that they designers only looked at the problem from 1 side, how to retrieve files but nothing on how to save files as you get them. If you consider both where you save files as well as how to find them you find you will spend less time search for where does this file belong or what catalog do I add this to. You should not have to resort to 2 or 3 different programs to manage your image files or any of your files. Each time you are forced to use another program to do what ThumbsPlus can't do you waste time and increase your chances of misfiling a file and loosing track of it.

Of the 6 basic requirements that a program like this should do to manage and catalog your files I found that only 2 requirements were half done and the rest it failed to do:

Allowing keywords to be assigned to files and a search engine with lots of powerful features is a good thing. Also, being able to view files in thumbnail mode is important but changing to detailed or just list mode was not obvious on how to do it if at all possible. Batch jobs are also good to help better manage files quick and easily.

Things like slide shows, creating contact sheet and images editors of are nice but add nothing to managing your files.

In my opinion, anything less then the requirements above is not worth it and you are just throwing your money away.

    __________________________________________________________________________________

    CON:

(1)-Search is cumbersome to use. Tabs in the search dialog box only envite trouble and is cumbersome to deal with. There are much better ways to do this without hiding options on different tabs.

Cons: (2)-Can't assign keywords to folders like you can with files. If you are good about filing your files away to folders and subfolders Thumbs+ does not allow you to set keywords to the folder which would make a keyword search more useful. Rather then having to put the same keyword in all the files why not just assign them to the folder so a keyword search brings up just the folder rather then all the files in the folder. The will make it much easier to file and catalog a new or unknown files.

(3)-Can't search for folders. If you have thousands of images and you are trying to match a stray image to a common group it would be much more effective if you can search for the folders rather then just the contents of the folders that come up. It would be a lot easier to deal with a handful of folder to look at then thousands of images to sort through.

(4)-Can't view folders or shortcuts to folders in file view frame. Folder shortcuts are good to speed up navigating your folders for filing away new files and browsing for files. Nesting folders helps keep track of large amounts of common images and being able to search for them, see them in the file view frame and open them up make it a lot easier and faster to save and get files. Adding this feature along with the folder tree in the upper left frame will make navigation quick and easy.

(5)-No Folder Thumbnails. Thumbs of folders and shortcuts to folders in the file view frame should allow you to put a thumbnail image in it so you can tell what is in it with a glance to make browsing a lot easier.

(6)-Can't view ALL files. Rather then allowing you to view all files and providing away to filter out selected files that you don't want to see Thumbs+ Designers stood on their heads and decided to filter everything out and provide a way to add things in with restrictions on what you can add. The problem with this way of thinking is that there is no way you can add files that don't have known extensions "St.Mary", no extensions "Mary", folders or shortcuts to folders.
