- "Slash your long-distance bills"
Skype is well regarded for offering stable, free VOIP to other Skype users and affordable calling from a PC to a phone, be it a landline or a cell phone. The most recent upgrade makes getting in touch with friends and family--and even complete strangers--much, much easier.
Functionality still varies depending on your Internet connection and what else you're doing with it while using Skype, but they are making some efforts to improve that. When you finish a Skype call, a Web page opens and asks you about the conversation's sound quality. The clean layout combines familiar chat client functions with a dialing interface, so that calling a phone is as simple as entering the desired number and hitting the dial button.
Improvements include conference calling with as many as nine people, video calling, and a browser plug-in that turns phone numbers on Web pages into links that automatically dial via Skype when clicked. There are also Skypecasts, throwbacks to the party-line multiperson telephone conversations from the mid-20th century.
Overall, we think Skype is a strong contender in the Internet Telephony category, and anyone who's interested in talking for free should give it a try. For international callers who have computers, this program is a no-brainer solution for long-distance bills.

"unable to hear every word when calling UK from Nigeria"
Pros: Accesibility and cost
Cons: There is nothing I dont like except when I callUK land line I do not hear every word and it makes the conversation almost impossible.
Summary: Better and cheaper than the telephone service

Version: Skype 3.8.0.180
"Wide panel at startup - just SITS there UNTIL minimized"
Pros: Generally works well. I pay for the 24/7 US/Canada plan, which I love. It's VERY affordable, efficient, dependable.
Cons: I detest that very wide panel at Skype's startup that just SITS there UNTIL it's minimized. A more compact and manageable desktop footprint would be much more welcome and far less obtrusive. Also, my headset needs adjustment after each removal.
Summary: I use Skype. It's free, efficient, dependable, despite some spammers. I can talk and be seen by my international friends who don't pay for their Skype., but I pay for the 24/7 US/Canada plan, which I love. It's VERY affordable, but I'm scandalize... read more >>

Version: Skype 3.8.0.180
Pros: The free service is fine. Fun even.
Cons: Very bad customer service.
Summary: I like the free part, but. . .
I gave them money, and used about 20% of my pool of money before they blocked my account with no notice or explanation. They have ignored 3 service requests in three weeks, but their automated email respo... read more >> - See all 17 user reviews Write review
