Publisher's description of Scrivener

Writing a book - or even a single short story or research paper - is about more than hammering away at the keys until done. Research, scrawling fragmentary ideas that don't seem to fit anywhere yet, collecting faded photos from old newspapers, shuffling index cards to find that elusive structure - most writing software is only fired up after much of the hard work is already done. Enter Scrivener: writing software that stays with you from that first, unformed idea all the way through to the first - or even final - draft. Outline and structure your ideas. Take notes. Storyboard your masterpiece using a powerful virtual corkboard. View research while you write. Track themes using keywords. Dynamically combine multiple scenes into a single text just to see how it fits.
Version 1.02 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

Version: Scrivener 1.11
"Interesting program yet to realize its full potential worth $40 for writers."
Pros: i like its organizing (but flawed - see below) pane to left of main text window and several co-ordinated panes which interact with other views like the unfortunately named "corkboard."
Cons: Lots I don't like: the lack of sorting ability of topics/files in main pane to left (like, chapters numbers - how hard can alphanumeric sorting be to add to a list?); the lack of standard Apple features such as "Save As" and "Undo" (Control-Z) in standard apple word processors such as TextEdit, TextWrangler, Nisus, Mariner et al. The relatively clumsy hypertext linkage compared to VoodooPad or DEVONthink, which also offers almost unlimited database, keyword, concordance and relevance searching for essentially the same price and its very useful, coordinated web search engine DEVONagent. The corkboard reminds me of preschool when I wore my Daddy's shirt as a smock. OmniOutliner is much more useful in this regard - less cute but more useful.
Scrivener has a way to go before I give up other word processor-organizers/mind-mappers like VoodooPad, NoteTaker, Curio, OmniGraffle Pro, and especially DEVONthink (which i am using more and more as my primary word processor, with preferences allowing windows at close out to open on reboot and the Extras script Workspaces to allow multiple projects to open and close with a single click.)
Its split windows feature is counter-intuitively designed and confusing.
Smultron (recently updated for Leopard) and TextMate in Project mode do much the same as Scrivener and Smultron (which also has split non-confusing text windows) is free, whereas TM is slightly more than Scrivener. The advantage to programmers of both these programs is added value to their word processing capabilities.
