Eye Candy
To read the Candyfreak article click here. Click here for a slideshow of how the candy kitchen was created. In the October issue of Wondertime, author Steve Almond, an admitted candy addict, talks about the challenges of creating a healthy Halloween (his favorite day of the year) for their 2-year-old daughter, Josie. The piece is a fun read, especially for those of us with a sweet tooth, but it's a particular treat for the eyes. To illustrate the story, Wondertime's art team decided to follow the credo that some things are best hidden in plain sight and created a kitchen made of sweets -- 26 varieties, in fact. The concept required lots of planning and organizing. Then, on the day of the shoot, Design Director Carolyn Eckert, stylist Mary Ellen Sullivan and a crew of 4, spent almost 8 hours decorating a studio space in Boston. Counters made of Swedish fish; a fridge covered with marshmallows (over 1500 used). Flowing water made from gummy sharks; the floor tiled in chocolate. Over 17 feet of Boomberry Punch Fruit by the Foot was used just to decorate the high chair! It was a sweet piece of work. (See the complete list below.) And what became of all that candy? Well let's just say the frenzied team took less than 2 hours to break down the set. Candy Kitchen
