Asus Eee PC 901 (white, Windows XP)
price range: $418.39 - $499.99

The good: Much-improved battery life; new mouse and quick-launch buttons; still highly portable and reasonably priced.
The bad: Slightly bigger than the Eee 900; price is creeping up to the full-size laptop range.
The bottom line: The long-awaited Asus Eee PC 901 is the best version of this inexpensive Netbook yet, but it's facing increased competition from the likes of HP, Dell, and MSI.
Editors' note, October 27, 2008: We have revised the rating of this product to reflect the changing competitive Netbook landscape.
Editors' note: On July 16, 2008, we updated this review to correct errors in our performance charts.
We've been impressed by the Asus Eee PC line from the very first 7-inch model in the fall of 2007, and it seems as if every time we turn around, there's a new version hitting store shelves. This 9-inch version, the
The $599 Eee PC 901 is the best version of this inexpensive laptop yet, thanks to its fantastic battery life and design tweaks--including better touch pad mouse buttons and new quick-launch buttons. Like the Eee PC 900, it offers a choice of Windows XP or Linux operating systems and has a reasonable 12GB (20GB in the Linux version) of solid-state hard-drive space.
While the Eee was the first consumer Netbook on the market, the competition hasn't been idle. Hewlett-Packard now has the excellent 2133 Mini-Note, Dell is working on a Netbook-style laptop, and MSI's oft-delayed Wind is gaining buzz as an Eee-PC killer. Now priced at $600, the Eee PC suddenly finds itself in the same category as budget mainstream laptops, which offer faster processors and much larger hard drives, but not the portability and battery life of the Eee. To keep up with the competition, Asus will have to double down on either price or performance in future versions of the Eee PC, or face being squeezed out of a market it almost single-handedly created.

The new Eee PC is marginally larger than the first 9-inch version, the Eee PC 900, and our review unit had a glass black finish, rather than the white, pearlized plastic look of the three previous Eee PCs we've reviewed. The Eee PC is still incredibly small, about the size of a trade paperback book, a size that until recently was only available in high-priced ultraportable laptops or even higher-priced UMPCs.
The touch pad now has two distinct mouse buttons, as opposed to the rocker-style left/right switch on previous Eee PC models. The touch pad still supports the gesture controls (similar to those on the MacBook Air and Pro) first introduced on the Eee PC 900. Images can be pinched and unpinched with the thumb and forefinger to zoom in and out, and two fingers can be used to scroll up and down Web pages.
The keyboard, with its tiny UMPC-size keys, is still hard to use for expended periods, but we do like the new row of quick-launch buttons that sit above the keyboard, for turning off the display, scrolling through different screen resolutions, switching between power-saving modes and launching Skype.
The display is the same 8.9-inch one on the Eee 900, with a decent 1,024x600-pixel native resolution, which is much easier to use than the 800x480-pixel resolution of the original 7-inch Eee PCs.

The SD card slot offers a good opportunity to boost the hard-drive space, letting you pop in your own flash memory, adding to the built-in 12GB (4GB is on the motherboard, and there's an 8GB SSD chip under a user accessible panel on the bottom of the system. That's still not a lot of space for files and applications (and less than the 20GB that the otherwise identical Linux version supplies--your bounty for skipping the cost of an XP license).
The Eee PC 901 is the first laptop we've gotten our hands on with Intel's new Atom processor, specifically designed for small, low-power Netbook-style devices such as this (we've since reviewed the MSI Wind U100 and updated the performance charts here). The single-core Intel Atom processor performed about as expected, coming in well behind a Core 2 Duo system in the form of the Dell Inspiron 1525 and ahead of the single-core Celeron Eee PC 701 and HP's VIA-powered 2133 Mini-Note. We also saw much improved battery scores, and low power consumption is one of the main selling points for Atom-powered products. Intel is already purportedly working on a new generation of dual-core Atom chips that may improve performance while multitasking.
The Asus Eee PC 901 ran for 5 hours and 15 minutes on our video playback battery drain test, which is one of the best battery life scores we've seen for a laptop in any category. That's thanks in large part to the Eee's energy-efficient design, using the new Intel Atom CPU and a solid-state hard drive. The system will also automatically underclock the CPU while running on battery power (although you can force it to run in high-performance mode through a system tray application).
Asus covers its laptops with a standard, one-year parts-and-labor warranty, and it offers online Web-based help and a toll-free phone number. The company's support Web site includes the expected driver downloads and a brief FAQ, but lacks useful features such as user forums or the chance to chat in real time with a technician.

Good little computer with big design flaw
by pp747 on August 27, 2008
Pros: Great weight and shape. Boots up surprisingly fast.
Cons: The 12GB 901 has two 4GB and 8GB hard drives. The XP operating system is installed on the 4GB drive. As a result, as soon as Windows updates, the C: drive fills up and you get low space warnings for the C: drive, and the drive becomes sluggish.
Summary: There is no way for the user to install the operating system on the larger drive. Why they split it up into two drives is beyond me. Definitley a big ...
Summary: There is no way for the user to install the operating system on the larger drive. Why they split it up into two drives is beyond me. Definitley a big design flaw. If it wasn't for this serious shortcoming, the 901 would be a home run out of the park.
This computer was the perfect size and weight for me. But I have reluctantly decided to return this to Costco becuase of the small 4GB C: drive filling up when windows is updated. I recommend that the operating system be put on the 8GB drive, or better yet, install a single 12GB drive.

One of the best Netbooks you can buy!
by hiitsmelenny on November 14, 2008
Pros: Portability, speed, price (you should not spend more than 450, i bought mine for 380), battery, eee community, bluetooth, webcam, to make up for small storage space eee gives i think a 50gb online storage space, and ability to upgrade by yourself.
Cons: I can understand peoples comments on the touchpad's sensitivity, causing the cursor to jump when you accidentally touch it when typing, all i can say is don't touch it. I got used to the keyboard right away and i have medium size hands for a male.
Summary: After researching for a couple of weeks on and off about netbooks, i finally decided to get the eee 901 and am using it to write this right now! People ...
Summary: After researching for a couple of weeks on and off about netbooks, i finally decided to get the eee 901 and am using it to write this right now! People who don't know much about computers end up using all their memory and complaining. Memory might be a problem in the future but i download the things i absolutely need on the d-drive and everything else such as my essays or music on a memory stick i brought. This is a website that teaches you how to make everything download to the d-drive automatically:http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/how-to-change-the-default-location-for-installing-applications-in-windows/. This is not to replace your main computer. I love to bring it everywhere and my friends are always so amazed my its size as still not a lot of people know about netbooks yet. when i first opened it from the box the start up time was less than 30sec and after downloading everything it was still about 30sec. I am still playing with the bluetooth and i used the audio gateway to play music from my phone but was disappointed because it was blotchy and not very loud. the speakers alone are pretty loud for its size but definitely not for a audiophile. Battery life is amazing. I love the touchpad: one finger to move the cursor or left click, two fingers to scroll up and down, 3 fingers to right click. You can even pinch the screen to zoom into pictures you have downloaded. webcam is surprisingly bright and skype is already downloaded along with adobe reader and for some reason two word document programs. It comes with a nice soft carrying case along with a charger and other things. I must warn the charger can get really hot while charging. I plan on upgrading my eee to 2gb of ram eventually and maybe even touchscreen later on. overall i love my new netbook!
Here are the other netbooks around and why i did not chose them:
Dell's mini 9 had too many upgrades and ended up being $100 more than the eee 901 just to get the same features. Otherwise i would have brought it right away because of its looks.
Personally lenovo is my choice in laptop/desktops but its first attempt at a netbook wasn't so good.
eee 1000 also had alot of upgrade options such as 1000hd or 1000h or 1000ha. i was too lazy to see all the differences but portability was a key factor for me buying a netbook. The 1000 is so what bigger.
Hp mini 1000, one of the newest to the netbooks, looks amazing and i probably would choice instead of my eee. but again too many upgrade options and there wasn't that many reviews on it for me to be confident on buying it.
msi wind cnet told me bad!
There are others out there with bigger storage space and other options. its all up to you, but i feel the eee 901 was the best choice for me.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Useless netbook.
by camelgirl65 on October 31, 2008
Pros: Small, long battery life. Fantastic tech service, easily reached.
Cons: As a FAST touch typist the tiny keyboard was a nightmare. The touchpad is so overly sensitive it has a life of it's own & you never know where you are "clicking." C & D drives inefficient.
Summary: I was so excited to get this to use for traveling. I had it for 2 days & I RETURNED IT. Absolutely infuriating to use because of the tiny keyboard ...
Summary: I was so excited to get this to use for traveling. I had it for 2 days & I RETURNED IT. Absolutely infuriating to use because of the tiny keyboard & overly sensitive mousepad which cannot be adjusted without downloading new drivers (according to Asus techies). I didn't like the way the C & D drive are organized. The C drive & D drive make downloading a real problem. The downloads go automatically to C drive but there is very little memory on C. They need to go to D. I used up the C memory by downloading Netflix viewer. Then when I moved it to D, I couldn't delete it from C.
I will not buy another Netbook, they are cute but useless.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I purchased one to use for evening browsing in front of the TV and online poker. Now I can also take it to bed and stream Netflix and other online video. While I wouldn't want to work on one full time, this machine provides a high level of computing power in such a small package. With various USB accessories, this could be the configured to address several computing tasks "in the field".
