Police seek woman's identity in Logan slaying
Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Nov 11, 2008 by Ben Winslow Deseret News
Cache County Sheriff's investigators are hoping the state medical examiner can help identify a woman whose body was found next to a river in Logan Canyon.
The woman is described as white or Latino, in her 30s, about 5- foot-4, 115 to 130 pounds, with fine black hair, French manicured nails and no tattoos. She was fully clothed, deputies said.
"We believe she died from a gunshot wound to the head," Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Matt Bilodeau said Monday.
The state medical examiner is taking dental impressions, lifting fingerprints and looking for trace evidence on the body to help identify it. So far, they have been unsuccessful.
"We'll do everything we can to find out who this woman is and what happened to her," Bilodeau said.
Meanwhile, deputies have been fielding phone calls from people wondering about missing loved ones. Calls have been coming in constantly about ex-wives or ex-girlfriends that haven't been heard from in some time.
"We're going to follow every single one," Bilodeau said. "Because you never know that one little thing could break this wide open."
Just before 3 p.m. on Saturday, deputies said James Bilskie was looking for a place to fish near the Birch Glen summer home area when he spotted what he thought was body between U.S. 89 and the Logan River. He wanted to make sure it wasn't a "dummy from Halloween," Bilodeau said, and then drove to Logan to tell authorities what he found.
Search and rescue teams helped look for clues at the scene. A searcher from the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office came up with waterproof metal detector and fanned out over the area to look for evidence in connection with the woman's death.
Police were not discussing what evidence they have seized but urged more tips from the public to 435-755-1000.
