Lone Peak wins another Region 4 tennis crown

Deseret News (Salt Lake City),  Oct 3, 2008  by Jaclyn Olsen

OREM -- In what's becoming an annual occurrence, the Lone Peak girls tennis team once again dominated the Region 4 championships by taking four of the five region titles.

Whitney White moved up from first doubles last season to tackle the first singles position this year, and she didn't disappoint as she took out all challengers, culminating in a final match against Timpanogos' Rachel Clarke for the title.

"I went out there and attacked every ball, focused on moving the ball from side to side. Consistency was my main goal. Rachel is my favorite person to play against," said White after her 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Cameryn Call moved up from a state championship at third singles last year for the Knights to a position at second singles this season, and finished off her second straight region title by taking out Timpanogos' Heather Jackman 6-3, 6-1.

The Knights also went out on top against Pleasant Grove in the first and second doubles finals. Mindy Wong and Bailee Henneman defeated Arica Wilson and Gentry Robinson in a hard-fought 7-6, 6-4 match, and Kristi Elmer and Kristen Call took out Torrey Best and Stephanie Hale in three sets, 6-0, 6-7, 6-2 for the final Lone Peak title.

The only championship the Knights didn't run away with was the third singles position as Timpanogos came through for the victory behind a tough performance by Shayla Gibb, who defeated Lone Peak's Jordan Ricks for the trophy.

Both the Knights and the Timberwolves will be sending all five of their teams to state, while Pleasant Grove adds three teams, Lehi one and Spanish Fork one.

The region only has three spots at state this year, and that fact put plenty of extra pressure on the matches for third place this season.

"That's gonna be rough on all of our sports," said Timpanogos coach Suzy Hansgen about Region 4 losing one spot at state throughout the year.
