Wolverines get top seed

Few seeding panels for the NCS volleyball playoffs have had easier decisions than the one running the Division I meeting on Nov. 9. When it came to naming the No. 1 seed, Deer Valley was head and shoulders above the rest of the field. The Wolverines posted an overall record of 36-4 on the season. No other Division I team had more than 29 wins. Deer Valley will have a first-round bye and prepare to host a Nov. 15 quarterfinal against the winner of a Nov. 12 match between No. 9 Liberty (16-18) and No. 8 James Logan (16- 9).

Matadors, Cougars roll on

Both the Miramonte High School and Campolindo High football teams are rolling towards the NCS playoffs after a pair of impressive wins on Nov. 7. Miramonte knocked off Las Lomas 33-31 on a last-minute interception by Conor Lowery and Campolindo used 166 yards rushing by Anthony Rodriguez to beat Alhambra 35-6. A Campolindo win over Acalanes on Nov. 14 would give the Cougars the DFAL title outright.

On deck

Acalanes at Campolindo, football, Nov. 14, 7 p.m. -- The DFAL title is there for the taking when the Cougars host the Dons. With a win Campolindo would finish the league season 5-0. A loss by Campolindo and a Miramonte win over Alhambra would mean a co- championship for the Cougars and Matadors.

-- Diablo Valley vs. Cabrillo/Merced winner at Merced College, JC men's water polo, Nov. 15, 11:45 a.m. -- The Vikings earned the No. 2 seed in the NorCal Water Polo Championships and they'll play the winner of the Cabrillo/Merced game. If the Vikings win, they will play again at 4:45 p.m. for the championship. If they lose, they'll play the third-place match at 3:30 p.m.

-- Pittsburg at Antioch, football, Nov. 15, 1 p.m. -- It's the Big Little Game. One could go just for tradition alone, but there are some good storylines folded into what will be the 90th regular season meeting between the Pirates and Panthers. Pittsburg has won five of the past six meetings, but Antioch won the last time it was played at Eells Field. The Panthers (4-5, 1-3 BVAL) would need an upset over the Pirates (8-1, 4-0) in order to be eligible for the playoffs.
